Selfie Day is an informal excuse to experiment with a self-portrait and capture the mood of the moment. No studio or separate photographer is required: the person making the picture also takes the starring role.

How it is celebrated: people share self-portraits, try unusual angles and gather friends for group shots. Social media photo challenges and competitions reward playful ideas as well as camera skills.

Photographic self-portraits predate smartphones by well over a century. Robert Cornelius photographed himself in 1839, holding his pose far longer than today’s quick tap takes.
