Russian Folk Arts and Crafts Day

June 21 · Level 4 · #1376 of 2238

Russian Folk Arts and Crafts Day celebrates the makers who keep traditional crafts alive and developing. Painting, pottery, lace and other practices carry regional histories through their materials, patterns and skills passed from teacher to apprentice.

How it is celebrated: museums and workshops organise exhibitions, craft fairs and hands-on sessions. Visitors watch makers at work, try techniques and learn the stories behind familiar objects.

Khokhloma’s golden finish contains no gold: metal powder, a coating and heat create its characteristic glow. The decoration is also a lesson in materials.
