World Car-Free Day
September 22 · Level 9 · #236 of 2238

World Car-Free Day invites people to try a different way of getting around. Walking, cycling and public transport offer a glimpse of streets with less traffic noise, cleaner air and more room for people.
How it is celebrated: participating cities close selected streets to cars and organize bike rides, outdoor activities and public events. Some transport operators offer free journeys or special fares to make switching easier.
A road closure can double as a full-size urban experiment: space normally used for driving and parking becomes somewhere to play, walk or meet.
