Bulgarian Independence Day

Bulgarian Independence Day marks 22 September 1908, when Bulgaria cut its last formal ties with the Ottoman Empire and became a fully sovereign kingdom.

How it is celebrated: Sofia and Veliko Tarnovo hold solemn ceremonies with flag raisings and wreath layings, and towns across the country put on festive concerts.

Independence was proclaimed in Veliko Tarnovo, in the Church of the Holy Forty Martyrs. Prince Ferdinand took the title of tsar, and the country became the Kingdom of Bulgaria.
