Ukrainian Cossack Day
October 1 · Level 9 · #330 of 2238
Ukrainian Cossack Day honours Cossack history and its place in Ukraine’s cultural identity. It explores military traditions, community life and the legacy of the Zaporizhian Sich, which remains an important part of the country’s historical memory.
How it is celebrated: museums and cultural institutions organise exhibitions, talks and history activities. Folk performances, craft demonstrations and historical reenactments also introduce audiences to aspects of Cossack life.
Leaders in the Zaporizhian Sich were elected at a rada, an assembly of Cossacks. Military organisation existed alongside a tradition of choosing leaders collectively.
