This UN observance highlights older people’s rights and participation in society. It recognises their contributions while drawing attention to accessibility, independence and the respect people deserve at every age.
How it is celebrated: community gatherings, concerts, awareness campaigns and intergenerational activities bring people together. Volunteers offer practical support, and organisations discuss ways to make services and public spaces more accessible.
A central concern is ageism: judging someone’s abilities or opportunities by their age. The day therefore addresses discrimination as well as care and support.
