International Music Day
October 1 · Level 9 · #270 of 2238
International Music Day celebrates an art that connects people across languages and cultures. It encourages access to music and musical education, welcoming listeners and beginners as well as professional performers.
How it is celebrated: concerts, open lessons, musician meet-and-greets and special radio programmes introduce audiences to different genres. Events also offer opportunities to discover unfamiliar instruments and musical traditions.
The International Music Council launched the first observance in 1975. One of its leading advocates was the celebrated violinist Yehudi Menuhin, who championed music’s ability to bring people together.
