Nigeria Independence Day
October 1 · Level 10 · #92 of 2238

Nigeria Independence Day marks the end of British colonial rule in 1960. It is an occasion to reflect on national history and the future of a country whose many peoples and languages share a common citizenship.
How it is celebrated: official ceremonies, parades, national addresses and cultural events mark the occasion. Green-and-white flags feature prominently, and Nigerian communities abroad organise celebrations of their own.
Independence did not immediately make Nigeria a republic. That change came exactly three years later, on the anniversary of independence.
