March First Independence Movement Day
March 1 · Level 10 · #17 of 2238

South Korea's March First Independence Movement Day honours the protests against Japanese colonial rule that began in 1919. It remembers people who called publicly for Korean independence despite the danger of violent repression.
How it is celebrated: national flags are displayed, commemorative ceremonies take place and museums explore the movement's history. Tributes recognise the activists who carried its message through towns and villages.
The Korean name, Samiljeol, encodes the date: the first day of the third month. It commemorates the start of a movement, rather than the day Korea finally gained liberation.
