Grapefruit Harvest Festival in Cuba
March 1 · Level 2 · #1838 of 2238

This festival marks the grapefruit harvest in Cuba's citrus-growing areas. It celebrates the work of farmers and the surprising variety of treats that come from one sharp, bittersweet fruit.
How it is celebrated: fairs offer tastings of fresh fruit, juices and cocktails, cooks make jam and compete with their recipes, and live Cuban music fills the evening.
The grapefruit did not grow wild: it arose as a cross between a pomelo and a sweet orange in Barbados in the 18th century. One of Cuba's citrus-growing areas is the Isle of Youth.
