Dzhigit Day
March 1 · Level 8 · #524 of 2238

Dzhigit Day celebrates the courage and skill of riders known in the Caucasus and Turkic lands as dzhigits. It is a holiday of horses, daring and old riding traditions.
How it is celebrated: at hippodromes and out on the steppe, riders show off their tricks at full gallop, picking objects up from the ground, standing in the saddle and swinging under the horse's belly. Music plays, folk ensembles dance, and spectators admire traditional costumes.
The word dzhigit comes from the Turkic languages and means a brave, agile young horseman. The trick riding itself grew out of cavalry training, where riders learned to handle both weapon and horse at once.
