Beer Day in Iceland
March 1 · Level 4 · #1474 of 2238

Iceland's Beer Day marks the legal return of regular-strength beer in 1989. The informal celebration recalls a change in everyday life after beer restrictions had outlasted much of the country's wider alcohol prohibition.
How it is celebrated: pubs and breweries arrange tastings and special offers, while friends meet to try local beers. Venues also use the occasion to introduce Icelandic brewing traditions and different styles.
Before the ban ended, wine and spirits were already legal, but beer stronger than 2.25 percent alcohol remained prohibited. Buying a strong drink could therefore be lawful while buying an ordinary lager was not.
