Bosnia and Herzegovina Independence Day
March 1 · Level 8 · #570 of 2238

Bosnia and Herzegovina Independence Day recalls the 1992 referendum on leaving Yugoslavia. For those who observe it, the occasion represents the country's sovereignty, although the anniversary is not embraced equally across the state.
How it is celebrated: commemorative gatherings, wreath-laying ceremonies and cultural programmes mark the day. Celebrations are particularly associated with the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina; Republika Srpska generally does not observe it.
The referendum lasted two days, 29 February and 1 March. Its opening date therefore appears on the calendar only in a leap year.
