St David's Day
March 1 · Level 1 · #2031 of 2238

St David's Day honours the patron saint of Wales and celebrates Welsh cultural identity. Its religious roots sit alongside a lively appreciation of the Welsh language, music and traditions passed between generations.
How it is celebrated: communities hold parades, concerts and church services, while schools organise performances and creative competitions. Children may wear traditional dress, and daffodils or leeks appear on lapels.
The day's two plant emblems have a linguistic connection. One Welsh name for the daffodil is cenhinen Bedr, meaning Peter's leek, linking the spring flower with its rather more savoury companion.
