Restoration of Independence Day
December 1 · Level 9 · #298 of 2238

On 1 December Portugal remembers the 1640 uprising that ended sixty years of rule by the Spanish crown and restored the country's independence. The Duke of Braganza became King John IV.
How it is celebrated: in Lisbon a ceremony with a flag-raising is held in Restauradores Square, named after the "restorers" of 1640, while museums and schools across the country revisit the story.
The coup was planned by a group of nobles known in history as the Forty Conspirators. The day was a public holiday again from 2016, after a few years off the calendar.
