Day of the Russian Squadron's Victory at Cape Sinop

This is one of Russia's Days of Military Glory. On 1 December 1853 (18 November in the old calendar) the squadron of Admiral Pavel Nakhimov destroyed an Ottoman squadron in the bay of Sinop on the southern Black Sea coast.
How it is celebrated: sailors and veterans lay flowers at monuments to Nakhimov, and ships and naval schools hold formal parades and history lessons.
The Battle of Sinop is often described as one of the last major battles of the age of sail. The Russian ships used powerful shell guns that fired explosive shells.
