Day Without Art

Day Without Art is a moment to remember the artists, musicians and theatre people lost to HIV/AIDS, and to ask what the world loses when their voices go quiet. It falls on 1 December, the same day as World AIDS Day.

How it is celebrated: museums and galleries close their doors or cover artworks with cloth, while others host exhibitions, film screenings and readings about the epidemic and the people it took.

The idea came in 1989 from Visual AIDS, a New York organisation of people working in the arts. An empty wall can say more about loss than a full gallery.
