December 1 · Level 7 · #857 of 2238

The Day of the First President is a state holiday in Kazakhstan. It recalls the role of Nursultan Nazarbayev in the first years of the independent country.
How it is celebrated: there are official ceremonies, themed exhibitions and conferences, and talks in schools and universities about how the young state took shape.
The date is no accident: on 1 December 1991 Nazarbayev won Kazakhstan's first nationwide presidential election, and independence was declared two weeks later, on 16 December.
