Antarctica Day

Antarctica Day marks the signing of the Antarctic Treaty, which set aside the frozen continent for peace and science instead of territorial squabbles. It is a good excuse to think about the coldest, most remote place on Earth.

How it is celebrated: researchers at polar stations share photos and flags, while schools, museums and science centres around the world host talks, exhibitions and chats with people who have worked on the ice.

Twelve countries signed the treaty in Washington on 1 December 1959. It says Antarctica may be used for peaceful purposes only.
