Lammas / Lughnasadh
August 1 · Level 7 · #779 of 2238

Lammas and Lughnasadh are distinct early-harvest traditions that are often brought together today. English Lammas centres on the first bread of the harvest, while Irish Lughnasadh draws on Gaelic tradition and stories associated with the god Lugh.
How it is celebrated: people bake bread, share seasonal meals and attend fairs. Modern pagan communities hold harvest thanksgiving rituals, while Christian Lammas observances include blessing bread.
The name Lammas comes from an Old English expression meaning “loaf mass”. Bread is more than a seasonal treat here: it gave the occasion its name.
