Emancipation Day in Jamaica
August 1 · Level 9 · #303 of 2238

Jamaica's Emancipation Day honours freedom from slavery and the people who struggled to achieve it. It combines a celebration of dignity and cultural heritage with remembrance of the island's painful past.
How it is celebrated: commemorative ceremonies, church services, concerts and cultural performances bring communities together. Overnight Emancipation Jubilee observances use drumming, music and historical storytelling to welcome the anniversary of freedom.
Abolition in 1834 did not immediately mean full freedom. Many formerly enslaved people were required to keep working under an “apprenticeship” system, which ended in Jamaica in 1838.
