World Alzheimer's Day

This day is about talking openly about Alzheimer's disease: sharing reliable information, supporting patients and their families, and challenging the stigma around memory loss.

How it is celebrated: doctors give public talks and offer memory checks, support groups meet, and landmarks and ribbons turn purple. September is also marked as World Alzheimer's Month in many places.

The disease is named after the German doctor Alois Alzheimer, who described the case of his patient Auguste Deter in 1906. The awareness day itself was launched in 1994, at a conference in Edinburgh.
