Armenian Independence Day

Armenian Independence Day marks the public vote that set the country on its path out of the Soviet Union. In the referendum held on 21 September 1991, voters supported independence, making the date a milestone in modern Armenian history.

How it is celebrated: official ceremonies, concerts and cultural events bring people together, with national flags displayed in public spaces. The programme varies each year, and some anniversary celebrations have included military parades.

Armenia also celebrates Republic Day in May, remembering the independent Armenian republic established in 1918.
