International Day of Peace

The International Day of Peace was set up by the UN General Assembly in 1981. Since 2001 it has also been a day of non-violence and ceasefire, when fighting is meant to pause.

How it is celebrated: people hold minutes of silence, concerts, school lessons about peace and community events, and at UN headquarters the Peace Bell is rung.

That bell was a gift from Japan and was cast from coins collected by children from many countries. At first the day moved with the opening of the General Assembly session, and only from 2002 has it had a fixed date, 21 September.
