Kulikovo Day

Kulikovo Day commemorates Dmitry Donskoy’s victory over Mamai’s forces at the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380. Recognised in Russia as a day of military glory, it remembers those who fought and explores the battle’s place in the country’s history.

How it is celebrated: commemorative gatherings, flower-laying ceremonies and historical reenactments take place at Kulikovo Field. Museum tours and talks introduce visitors to medieval weapons, daily life and the events surrounding the battle.

Victory did not end dependence on the Horde: Khan Tokhtamysh sacked Moscow just two years later, in 1382. The battle’s importance lies in a longer historical story.
