Solar Coffee Day in Iceland
January 27 · Level 1 · #2237 of 2238

In Iceland, Sólarkaffi, or sun coffee, is a festive coffee break held when the sun returns after the dark winter months. It is especially loved in Ísafjörður, a town in the Westfjords in the northwest.
How it is celebrated: friends and neighbours gather around hot coffee and pönnukökur, thin Icelandic pancakes served with jam and cream or just sugar.
Ísafjörður sits beneath steep mountains that hide the sun from the town in winter, so its return really is something to toast.
