Defenders of the Fatherland Day in Turkmenistan honours servicemen and veterans. It is a day for thanking those who serve and keep the country safe.
How it is celebrated: military units hold formal ceremonies, flowers are laid at memorials, outstanding servicemen receive awards, and soldiers are congratulated by officials, colleagues and families.
Turkmenistan is one of the few countries whose status of permanent neutrality is recognised by the UN. The General Assembly adopted a resolution on it in 1995.
