Day of the Complete Liberation of Leningrad from the Nazi Siege

This remembrance day marks the complete lifting of the siege of Leningrad in 1944. It honours the city’s residents and defenders, remembering the hunger, cold and bombardment they endured and the people who kept others alive.

How it is celebrated: people lay flowers at memorials, including Piskaryovskoye Memorial Cemetery. Moments of silence, meetings with siege survivors, exhibitions and readings from personal diaries help preserve individual stories.

A corridor into the city was opened in January 1943, but the siege continued for another year. Breaking through the blockade and lifting it completely were separate milestones.
