International Holocaust Remembrance Day
January 27 · Level 4 · #1552 of 2238

International Holocaust Remembrance Day honours the six million Jews murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators, and remembers other victims of Nazism. Established by the United Nations, it emphasises preserving testimony, teaching history and confronting antisemitism.
How it is celebrated: commemorations include candle lighting, readings of victims’ names and memorial ceremonies. Museums and schools share documents and personal accounts through exhibitions, lessons and encounters with survivors.
The date marks the Soviet liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945. The UN established the international observance sixty years later, in 2005.
