International Port Wine Day
January 27 · Level 4 · #1518 of 2238

A toast to the fortified wine from Portugal that was born in the Douro Valley. People love it for its sweetness, deep aroma and way of opening up slowly in the glass.
How it is celebrated: fans join tastings to compare white, ruby and tawny styles, serve port with cheese or dark chocolate, and raise a glass to the winemakers of the Douro.
Port is made by adding grape spirit to fermenting wine, which stops the fermentation and leaves natural sweetness behind. The Douro region was officially demarcated in 1756, making it one of the oldest wine regions in the world.
