Russian Courier Service Day
December 17 · Level 5 · #1172 of 2238

Courier Service Day honours the officers who deliver important and classified documents to government bodies. It is one of the oldest services in Russia: such couriers once raced across the country on horseback.
How it is celebrated: there are ceremonial gatherings and awards, meetings with veterans of the service, and young officers are told about its traditions.
The Russian word for these couriers, feldyeger, comes from the German Feldjäger, meaning "field hunter". A courier corps was set up in the late eighteenth century under Emperor Paul I.
