International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers

This day draws attention to violence against sex workers and reminds everyone that every person has a right to safety and the protection of the law.

How it is celebrated: people gather for candlelit vigils, read out the names of those who died, and rights groups issue statements and run awareness events. The red umbrella has become the symbol of the sex workers' rights movement.

The day began in the United States in 2003 as a memorial to the victims of the serial killer known as the Green River Killer.
