Mothering Sunday

Mothering Sunday is Britain's traditional occasion for thanking mothers and spending time with family. It falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, so its date moves from year to year.

How it is celebrated: families give flowers and cards, make breakfast or share a special lunch. Churches hold Mothering Sunday services, and simnel cake, a fruit cake with marzipan, has a longstanding connection with the day.

The name originally referred to visiting one's mother church. For people working away from home, that journey could also provide a welcome chance to see their families.
