International Day for the Protection of Seal Pups
March 15 · Level 4 · #1542 of 2238
International Day for the Protection of Seal Pups draws attention to young seals and the threats they face. White-coated harp seal pups are particularly recognisable, having become a symbol of campaigns against cruel hunting practices.
How it is celebrated: conservation groups share information about seals, publish educational materials and campaign for the protection of marine wildlife. Supporters contribute to organisations working to safeguard these animals.
A whitecoat is not a separate seal species: the name describes a pup's early coat. Harp seal pups keep that fluffy white covering for only a few weeks before shedding it.
