Defenders of the Fatherland and Armed Forces Day in Belarus
February 23 · Level 10 · #167 of 2238
Belarus marks this day in honour of the country’s defenders and armed forces. Service members and veterans take centre stage, with particular attention to the ties between generations who have served.
How it is celebrated: wreaths and flowers are laid at military monuments, and formal gatherings feature awards and concerts. Greetings also reach beyond military units: families and workplaces commonly congratulate men regardless of their service history.
The unusually detailed name gives the holiday two subjects. It honours individual defenders as well as the armed forces themselves, placing people and the institution side by side.
