Anzac Day in New Zealand

Anzac Day is New Zealand's national occasion to remember those who served and died in war. It began with remembrance of the 1915 Gallipoli landings and now embraces service and loss across other conflicts as well.

How it is celebrated: communities attend dawn services, lay wreaths and wear red poppies. Veterans take part in parades, while the Last Post and a period of silence mark solemn moments of remembrance.

Anzac began as an acronym for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, before becoming a name with much wider significance.
