World Wetlands Day
February 2 · Level 5 · #1252 of 2238

Wetlands give wildlife a home while helping to store and filter water. This day draws attention to marshes, floodplains and other watery habitats that are easy to overlook but costly to lose.
How it is celebrated: nature reserves and environmental groups arrange guided walks, birdwatching and talks. Volunteers also clean up waterside habitats and share ways to restore damaged wetlands.
The day's international roots lead to Ramsar, a city in Iran. It was there that the Convention on Wetlands was adopted in 1971.
