Vodopol — the Water Spirit's Name Day
April 16 · Level 2 · #1856 of 2238

Vodopol is a folk observance rooted in the spring awakening of rivers and lakes. Traditional beliefs imagined their supernatural keeper, the vodyanoy, waking with the water. Keeping this spirit happy was thought to bring fishers good catches and a safe return to shore.
How it is celebrated: fishers traditionally offered food to appease the spirit and asked for a plentiful catch. Folklore gatherings now introduce these beliefs through stories about waterways and their mysterious inhabitants.
The vodyanoy supposedly did more than live underwater: he could gather fish together or lead them away from waiting nets.
