Bulgaria's Lawyers' and First Constitution Day

Bulgaria honours its legal profession alongside the country's first constitution, adopted in 1879. Known as the Tarnovo Constitution, it provides the historical focus for a day about the foundations of government and the people who put law into practice.

How it is celebrated: legal associations and universities hold ceremonial gatherings, lectures and discussions about legal history. Colleagues exchange congratulations, and professional achievements receive recognition.

The constitution takes its name from Tarnovo, where the Constituent Assembly adopted it. The city is now called Veliko Tarnovo and was itself a capital of medieval Bulgaria.
