Alexander Nevsky’s Victory at Lake Peipus Day
April 18 · Level 9 · #244 of 2238

This Russian day of military glory commemorates Alexander Nevsky's victory at Lake Peipus in 1242. Known as the Battle on the Ice, the encounter became an enduring part of historical remembrance surrounding the defence of the medieval Rus' lands.
How it is celebrated: commemorative ceremonies, museum activities, talks and historical reenactments explore the battle. Events introduce medieval equipment and the written evidence historians use to study it.
The famous image of masses of knights plunging through broken ice owes much to Sergei Eisenstein's film Alexander Nevsky. Early written accounts do not describe that scene.
