The King of Sweden's birthday is marked on 30 April, the day Carl XVI Gustaf was born. It is an official flag day, when the country raises its colours and wishes its monarch well.
How it is celebrated: flags fly over public buildings and from many homes, and well-wishers gather outside the Royal Palace in Stockholm. In the evening Swedes welcome Walpurgis Night with spring bonfires.
Carl XVI Gustaf was born in 1946 and became king in 1973 at the age of 27, after the death of his grandfather, Gustaf VI Adolf.
