International Chandlers' Day
April 30 · Level 1 · #2138 of 2238

International Chandlers' Day is an informal occasion celebrating candle makers and their craft. A small flame hides plenty of careful work: choosing wax, matching it with a wick and testing how the finished candle burns.
How it is celebrated: craft celebrations include workshops, displays of handmade candles and glimpses into the maker's process. Participants explore pouring wax into moulds, decorating candles and choosing fragrances, while makers exchange practical experience.
A candle's wick is mainly a delivery system for fuel. Melted wax travels up it and vaporises near the flame; it is chiefly that wax vapour that burns.
