Slovenia Independence and Unity Day
December 26 · Level 5 · #1139 of 2238
This is a national holiday of Slovenia remembering the 1990 plebiscite, in which Slovenes voted to create their own state. The results were announced on 26 December.
How it is celebrated: there are official ceremonies with speeches and wreath-laying, and museums and town squares host cultural programmes. For most Slovenes it is a quiet family day in the middle of the Christmas break.
In the plebiscite held on 23 December 1990, about 88.5 percent of voters backed independence. Statehood itself is marked separately, on Statehood Day, 25 June.
