Boxing Day

Boxing Day falls on the day after Christmas. By tradition, it was the day when servants and tradesmen who had worked over the holidays were given gifts.

How it is celebrated: in Britain and Commonwealth countries it is a day off, when families finish the Christmas leftovers, go for walks and head to the football. Shops open big sales, and many people support charities.

In Australia, the Sydney to Hobart yacht race starts on 26 December, and the Boxing Day Test cricket match begins in Melbourne. For many Australians the holiday mood now comes with a sporting soundtrack.
