Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa is a seven-day African American celebration held from 26 December to 1 January. It honours African roots, family and community.

How it is celebrated: each evening one candle is lit in the kinara, a holder for seven candles, and people talk about one of the seven principles known as Nguzo Saba, such as unity or creativity. Families sing, tell stories, share a big feast and exchange small gifts.

The holiday was created by Maulana Karenga in 1966, and its name comes from Swahili. The kinara holds three red candles, three green ones and a black one in the middle, which is lit first.
