Sambo Day in Russia celebrates a martial art developed in the Soviet Union from several wrestling traditions. It recognises athletes and coaches while giving newcomers a chance to discover a sport built around technique, composure and respect for an opponent.
How it is celebrated: clubs and sports schools hold tournaments, demonstrations and open training sessions. Coaches receive congratulations, and young participants get an introduction to the sport.
The name sambo abbreviates the Russian phrase for self-defence without weapons. Its sport and combat forms have different rules: combat sambo also allows striking.
