Cat Day in Japan
February 22 · Level 3 · #1780 of 2238
Japan's Cat Day gives feline companions a turn in the spotlight. This unofficial celebration brings together affection for pets, cat-themed popular culture and attention to animals still waiting for a home.
How it is celebrated: shops and cafés offer cat-inspired products and treats, while owners share photos of their pets. Animal welfare groups use the occasion to talk about responsible care and finding homes for cats.
The date is a sound joke. The Japanese word for two, ni, is playfully linked to nyan, the sound of a meow, making 2/22 a three-meow date.
