Buergsonndeg — Bonfire Festival
February 22 · Level 9 · #313 of 2238

Buergsonndeg is Luxembourg's communal farewell to winter, marked by a towering bonfire. It is associated with the first Sunday of Lent, so its calendar date changes, while the flames symbolically welcome spring.
How it is celebrated: local associations gather wood and build a large pyre, often around a wooden cross. Neighbours join torchlight processions and watch the blaze with hot drinks, soup and sausages close at hand.
Old Christmas trees can become part of the bonfire after being collected from households. Winter's decorations get one last job: helping to send winter on its way.
