National Mill Day in the Netherlands
May 9 · Level 1 · #2075 of 2238

National Mill Day opens up the Netherlands’ windmills and watermills and introduces the people who keep them working. These familiar landmarks become places to discover machinery, skilled craftsmanship and the care historic buildings need.
How it is celebrated: participating mills welcome visitors, while millers explain their mechanisms and demonstrate them when conditions allow. Some sites show grain milling or share stories of restoration.
Dutch mills did far more than grind flour. Many pumped water, helping drain low-lying land and keep it habitable.
