Europe Day

Europe Day recalls the Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950, when French foreign minister Robert Schuman proposed pooling European coal and steel production so that war between neighbours would become unthinkable. Today it is a celebration of the European Union's unity.

How it is celebrated: EU institutions open their doors to visitors, cities host concerts, debates and street parties, and the blue flag with a circle of twelve gold stars flies from public buildings.

The anthem of Europe is the “Ode to Joy” from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and it has no words, only the melody, so it sounds the same in every language.
